PC whips out the Sword to try to repel him. If you run around flaunting the Sword of Sunlight, Strahd is going to know about it and prepare for it. Revealing that you have the Sun Sword paints a gigantic target on you. The Sunsword does not have that same note about putting all of Strahd's goals on hold, this is on purpose and important to remember. I find it a shame that people treat it as such and I've been meaning to write a post about it some time.

Strahd does not want people to know about it. The tome is not a useless fluff item it has information which directly counters many of the Barovian legends surrounding Strahd.

However, the description of the Tome specifically states that all his goals are put on hold once he finds out about it being taken. The former may not even be guaranteed unless you, say, kill her just before he can turn her. Remember that the only things that will guarantee pushing Strahd's 'murder' button are killing Ireena and showing him that you have the Tome. If you play the information game correctly, this can help feed a more growing sense of paranoia in the players. Strahd might, in fact, find the party even more amusing for finding the Sword and decide to toy with them some more after stealing it away from them. Also note that Strahd finding the Sunsword doesn't necessarily mean death for the party. If Strahd does find out about the Sunsword before the players want him to, make sure you write it down somewhere so you can have it as part some big reveal somewhere down the line. This will definitely make the information game a lot more fun and help bring it to the center stage.

If they decide to use the Sword, it will have to be to kill. Also, remember that although the hags at Bonegrinder aren't necessarily directly affiliated with Strahd, they do have contacts with those in his castle. How would the Sunsword feel about this decision? Will it even be effective? They'll only be using the Sunsword for the stat bonus at that point. It'll be interesting to see how your players think about, say, attacking the hags at Bonegrinder or Baba Lysaga at Berez. Also note that Strahd is not the only enemy your players will be fighting. If you really want to be fun, you can have the Sunsword itself clash with the wielder by refusing to activate because it believes the situation is not 'dire' enough to warrant the risk of activation.

It should know everything about avoiding Strahd (tells party to be aware of Scrying spell), but not necessarily how to destroy him (let the party find out about the Heart another way, if at all). If I were you, I'd try to tie in everything the Sunsword knows to the theme of its own fear. You can use the Sunsword as a 'mentor' type character that'll explain things that your players may not necessarily know, this way the players will feel like they got something out of finding the sword, even if they can't use it directly. Having the Sunsword this early in the game will actually make for a really interesting campaign if you play your cards right. If you read them, yes, the Sunsword wants to slay Strahd, but not out of a general righteousness. You should remember that the Sunsword is sentient, and it has its own motivations.
